The question of tipping is one thing that seems certain to cause endless confusion for trekkers, particularly those on an organized trek. Tipping (aka Baksheesh) for the trekking crew has become an expected custom, but doing it right is far from easy.

If you have a single guide and a porter, it is quite easy—you simply tip 15% to 20% of the trip cost.

The real confusion comes when you have a big group with many trekkers and, therefore, an even bigger team with assistant guides (Sherpas), porters, and cooks.

It’s best to have all this worked out, at least approximately, before the trek starts.

It’s also a good idea to conduct the final operation with military efficiency.
