Overview

Nestled north of the peaceful lakeside city of Pokhara, the Annapurna region is one of Nepal’s most famous trekking destinations. Towering above this breathtaking landscape is Annapurna I (8,091m)—the first 8,000-meter peak ever climbed. Surrounding it are several impressive summits over 7,500m, forming a stunning Himalayan panorama.

One of the most iconic trekking routes here is the Annapurna Circuit, which crosses the legendary Thorung La Pass (5,416m). This trail takes you from lush valleys to high-altitude deserts, offering a deep dive into Nepal’s diverse landscapes and cultures. Another must-visit trek is the Annapurna Sanctuary, a hidden amphitheater of towering peaks that provides an unforgettable glimpse into Nepal’s rich natural beauty.

The journey begins along the Marsyangdi River, leading to the Tibetan-influenced village of Manang, known for its unique culture and breathtaking mountain views. After crossing Thorung La, trekkers descend to the sacred town of Muktinath, nestled in the Kali Gandaki Valley, home to ancient temples and spiritual significance.

For those continuing their adventure, avoiding the road walk a scenic drive takes you to Tatopani, famous for its hot springs. From here the second part journey begins heading towards Ghorepani and the stunning sunrise viewpoint of Poon Hill. The trail winds through lush forests and picturesque farmlands before reaching the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary—a spectacular glacial basin surrounded by towering peaks.

This trek combines two of Nepal’s most legendary routes, offering an unparalleled Himalayan experience filled with adventure, culture, and breathtaking scenery.

Who Is This Trek For?

The Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Sanctuary trek is a rewarding adventure with well-maintained trails and plenty of tea houses and lodges along the way. While the trek is straightforward, it includes long hiking days and high-altitude challenges, making it demanding yet incredibly fulfilling.

One of the toughest sections is crossing Thorung La Pass, which requires endurance and proper acclimatization. Trekking at altitudes above 3,000 meters places extra demand on the body, making it challenging even for experienced hikers.

Our itinerary is carefully planned to ensure gradual acclimatization, but physical preparation is essential. You should be comfortable walking 5 to 7 hours a day for multiple consecutive days.

Trek Distance and Duration

Trek Distance: The Annapurna Circuit combined with the Annapurna Base Camp trek covers a distance of about 230 kilometers (143 miles).

Daily Walking Hours: Daily trekking hours range from 5 to 8 hours, depending on the terrain and altitude, with some long ascents and descents.

Preparing for the Trek

To prepare for the trek, trekkers should focus on building stamina and strength. Aerobic exercises, strength training, and endurance hikes will help you get ready for the long days of walking and climbing. It’s also advisable to practice hiking at higher altitudes to get accustomed to the reduced oxygen levels.

Tips for the Trek:-

  • Altitude Sickness: Like all high-altitude treks, there is a risk of altitude sickness on the Annapurna Circuit. The trek’s highest point, Thorong La Pass, is at 5,416 meters, so it's crucial to take proper acclimatization breaks and avoid pushing yourself too hard. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol to reduce the risk.

  • Packing: Pack light but wisely. Essentials include warm clothing, a high-quality sleeping bag, sun protection (SPF, sunglasses, and hat), snacks, and energy bars. A good camera is also recommended to capture the stunning landscapes.

  • Trekking Permits: This trek requires two permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS card (Trekker’s Information Management System).

  • Rest and Hydration: Take your time to acclimatize and rest frequently. Ensure you stay hydrated and eat well to maintain your energy levels.

  • Local Interaction: Take the time to interact with local people. The trek offers a fantastic opportunity to learn about the customs, traditions, and cultures of the people living in this remote region.

Altitude Sickness

Due to the high altitude of the Annapurna Circuit, especially near Thorong La Pass, altitude sickness is a concern. The best way to prevent altitude sickness is to ascend slowly, allow your body to adjust, and stay well-hydrated. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. If you experience severe symptoms, talk to your Group Leader and will take all necessary measures. If it gets severe descend immediately and seek medical help.

Meals are typically simple but hearty.

Breakfast: Porridge, bread with jam or honey, omelette or boiled egg, with tea or coffee.

Lunch: A simple, single-course meal with tea or coffee.

Dinner: A simple, single-course meal with tea or coffee and a small fresh fruit dessert.

Snacks: Stock up on snacks, such as energy bars, nuts, and trail mix in Kathmandu before the trek.

Drinking Water

  • Avoid drinking untreated tap water.
  • Boiled or filtered water will be provided to fill your bottles.
  • Carry purification tablets or a filter bottle for towns where treated water isn’t available.
  • Help reduce plastic waste by avoiding single-use plastic bottles.

Please note: Special Diets on the Trek

We do our best to accommodate vegetarians, though options may be limited. However, due to the remote locations and varying food availability, it can be difficult (or even impossible) to cater to a wide range of dietary requirements.

If you have specific dietary needs, please contact our sales team in advance to check if we can accommodate your preferences. You may need to bring your own snacks or supplements to ensure you have the right food throughout the trek.

Separate menus are not available. We cannot take responsibility for any issues related to dietary restrictions or intolerances. We appreciate your understanding and recommend preparing in advance for the best experience.

Travel Insurance Your Safety Net

Due to the remote nature of the trek, it's essential to have comprehensive travel insurance. This insurance should cover emergency helicopter evacuation in case of injury or altitude sickness. Medical coverage and coverage for loss of personal belongings are also highly recommended. Given the high-altitude and isolated conditions, travel insurance is a critical safeguard for your safety during the trek.
