Trip Overview

The Lobuche East with Everest Base Camp Trek offers one of the most thrilling and awe-inspiring adventures in the Himalayas, blending the experience of reaching the iconic Everest Base Camp with the challenge of summiting Lobuche East, a 6,119-meter peak. The combination of trekking to Everest Base Camp and attempting a peak climb adds a sense of both accomplishment and excitement that few other treks can offer.

The trek to Everest Base Camp has long been one of Nepal's most famous routes. The Lobuche East climb is often seen as a logical progression for those looking to take on a more technical climb after Everest Base Camp, but with less demand than peaks like Island Peak or Mera Peak. The trek provides an exceptional opportunity for those who want to challenge themselves while still soaking in the breathtaking beauty of the Khumbu region.

What is the Lobuche East with Everest Base Camp trek like?

The journey begins from Lukla, a small mountain town famous for its airport, where trekkers fly in from Kathmandu. From there, you will trek through lush forests, Sherpa villages, and yak pastures to reach Namche Bazaar, the vibrant gateway to the Everest region. The journey to Everest Base Camp is often a dream come true for trekkers, where you will witness the majestic peaks of the Khumbu Icefall, Mount Pumori, and the towering Everest itself.

After Dingboche the trek reaching Everest Base Camp, the real excitement to the adventure begins.  You will see the Lobuche Peak close up and the route that takes you up to Lobuche, this is where the trek merges with the Lobuche East Peak climbing  Base Camp route. After your EBC is accomplished we retrace our trek back down from Gorekshep to this Lobuche East Base Camp. At this point, you will spend a couple of days preparing for the summit, receiving proper technical training and acclimatizing to ensure a safe and successful climb.

From Lobuche East, the view of the Himalayan giants, including Mount Everest, Ama Dablam, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, is absolutely magnificent. The climb itself requires some basic mountaineering skills such as the use of crampons and ice axes, but with the help of a certified guide and support crew, you will ascend safely to the summit.

After summiting Lobuche East, you’ll descend back down to Pheriche and continue trekking back through the legendary Namche Bazar, before heading back to Lukla and flying back to Kathmandu.

Essential Information

How Difficult Is Lobuche East Climbing

The Lobuche East with Everest Base Camp trek is a challenging adventure, combining the classic trek to Everest Base Camp with a technically demanding climb of Lobuche East (6,119 meters). The trek requires trekkers to have a good level of physical fitness, mental endurance, and some mountaineering skills, especially for summiting Lobuche East.

The terrain varies from lower-altitude, lush valleys to high-altitude glaciers, moraines, and rocky ascents. The weather can also change dramatically, with chilly temperatures and high winds above 5,000 meters, adding to the challenge. The trek demands solid stamina, careful acclimatization, and the ability to deal with technical climbing conditions when you attempt the summit.

Climbing Clinic by Climbing Sherpas: What to Expect

Before attempting the Lobuche East summit, climbers participate in a pre-climb training session known as a Climbing Clinic. Conducted by experienced Climbing Sherpas, this essential training ensures that both beginners and experienced trekkers are familiar with technical climbing skills, glacier travel, and safety procedures.

Purpose of the Climbing Clinic is to introduce basic mountaineering techniques for first-time climbers.

Teach safe use of climbing gear such as crampons, ice axes, and ascenders. Build confidence for glacier walks and fixed rope sections on the summit day. And ensure safety awareness in high-altitude, icy conditions.

Where & When Is It Conducted?

The Climbing Clinic is usually held at Lobuche East Base Camp (5,000m) . Conducted one day before the summit push, allowing climbers to practice in real snow & ice conditions. The Climbing Clinic helps you build confidence before the actual climb. Reduces risk by ensuring proper safety techniques, makes  first-time climbers feel comfortable using mountaineering gear thus  enhancing the chances of a successful and safe summit.

Trek Distance:

On average, the total distance covered during the Lobuche East with Everest Base Camp trek is approximately 200 kilometers. The trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp and back will take around 9 to 12 days, depending on the pace and acclimatization. Afterward, you'll continue with the ascent to Lobuche East and back.

Daily Walking Hours:

The daily walking hours vary between 5 to 8 hours. The trek to Everest Base Camp generally involves long days with some steep climbs. The climb to Lobuche East summit, depending on conditions, can take 6-8 hours on summit day.

Tourist Infrastructure:

The infrastructure along the Everest Base Camp route is relatively well-established, with tea houses providing basic accommodation and meals. However, as you reach higher altitudes, facilities become more basic. For the Lobuche East summit attempt, camping will be required, and you'll stay in tents at base camp and higher camps for the climb.

Guidelines To Travel Insurance

Given the remote and high-altitude nature of the Lobuche East with Everest Base Camp trek, it is essential to have travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation in case of emergencies. This type of insurance can be crucial, as the trek takes you far from towns or cities where medical services are accessible. A policy that covers mountaineering and medical treatment at high altitudes is strongly recommended. Insurance should also cover lost luggage or personal belongings in case of any unfortunate events.

What Permits And Regulations You Need ?

The Lobuche East with Everest Base Camp trek requires several permits:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Permit: USD 30 per person (valid for up to 30 days).
  • Pasang Lhamu Community, Lukla Permit: USD 20 per person.
  • Lobuche East Peak Climbing Permit: The cost varies depending on the season and your nationality. The permit generally costs:
  • From April to November: USD 250 per person.
  • From December to March: USD 125 per person.

Note: The climbing permit for Lobuche East is required in addition to the standard trekking permits.

Best Time to Do the Lobuche East with Everest Base Camp Trek

The best time to embark on the Lobuche East with Everest Base Camp trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) seasons.

Spring March to May

During this time, the temperatures are comfortable, and the trekking conditions are stable. Snow begins to melt, and the lower regions of the trek are lush with blooming wildflowers. The temperatures range from 24°C to -4°C at lower elevations and may drop to -10°C to -15°C at higher altitudes. This is the ideal time for trekking and climbing.

Autumn late September to November

This is another popular period for trekking, as the weather is clear and stable. The temperatures range from 25°C to -6°C. The autumn period also coincides with several Nepali festivals, providing trekkers with an additional cultural experience. The mountain views are stunning, with little to no cloud cover.

Off-Season June to August and December to February

While trekking in these months is possible, the weather is often unpredictable, with more rainfall in the summer and cold temperatures in the winter. The trail is less crowded, but the conditions can be harsh and more difficult.

Trekking Comforts: Where You Sleep And What You Eat

Lobuche Peak is located in a remote area away from the main teahouse village with limited infrastructure, meaning accommodations and food options vary along the route. Trekkers will experience a mix of teahouses, lodges, and tented camps, depending on the altitude and remoteness of the trail. Some tea houses offer hot showers and wifi for an extra cost, and you can also charge your devices for a small fee. • Meals in Tented Camps

Simple but high-energy meals prepared by the expedition cook. We serve soup, rice, pasta, potatoes, and energy-rich foods to maintain strength. Hot drinks like tea, coffee and rehydration drinks are served frequently to prevent dehydration. Some freeze-dried or packaged meals may be used due to the high-altitude conditions.

Key Considerations: Vegetarian options are widely available; meat is not recommended at higher altitudes due to lack of refrigeration. Food portions are generous, ensuring climbers get enough energy for the trek. Bring snacks (protein bars, nuts, chocolates) for quick energy boosts during long trekking days.

Note: Dietary restrictions can be accommodated if informed in advance.

Drinking Water: Boiled water is available along the trail for a small cost. You can also bring water purification tablets or use a water filter to purify water from local streams. It is advisable to avoid purchasing bottled water in order to minimize waste.
