Trip Overview

The Tsum Valley trek is one of Nepal's most unique and off-the-beaten-path journeys. Located in the northeastern part of the country, this trek takes you through an untouched, mystical area that is far less crowded than the popular Annapurna or Everest trails. A hidden treasure of the Himalayas, the Tsum Valley offers trekkers an authentic experience of Tibetan culture, mesmerizing landscapes, and jaw-dropping mountain views, including the mighty Manaslu.

Although this region was once closed to foreign trekkers for many years, it has now opened its doors to those seeking adventure and solitude. Whether you're looking to explore remote villages, ancient monasteries, or rugged terrain, the Tsum Valley Trek is the perfect escape for those eager to step off the usual tourist paths.

Why is The Tsum Valley The Hidden Gem Of Nepal?

Tucked away near the Tibetan border, the Tsum Valley is still relatively untouched by modern tourism. It’s a place where life moves at its own pace, far away from the crowds. Tsum Valley offers the perfect escape.

Tsum Valley, often referred to as the "Hidden Valley," is a secluded and remote gem nestled in the Gorkha district of Nepal. It was only opened to the outside world in 2008, making it a relatively new treasure for trekkers seeking something off the beaten path. What makes Tsum Valley truly special is its untouched natural beauty, rich Buddhist culture, and serene atmosphere, offering a perfect escape for those in search of tranquility and spiritual connection.

Rich Cultural Heritage: Tsum Valley is steeped in Tibetan Buddhist traditions, and its monasteries hold great religious significance. Ancient monasteries like Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, and Dhephu Doma Nunnery Gompa provide a glimpse into the region's profound spiritual history. Visitors can witness daily rituals, hear melodic Tibetan mantras, and immerse themselves in the peaceful ambiance of these sacred sites.

Breathtaking Natural Beauty: The valley is surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, lush forests, and crystal-clear rivers. With fewer crowds compared to other popular trekking destinations in Nepal, Tsum Valley offers a truly tranquil and pristine environment, perfect for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature.

Spiritual Journey: As a sacred Himalayan pilgrimage site, Tsum Valley holds deep spiritual significance for the locals. Trekkers who visit this valley can experience not just natural beauty, but also a profound sense of peace, as they explore its monasteries and interact with the local people, who still follow traditional Tibetan Buddhist practices.

Remote and Untouched: Tsum Valley remains largely unexplored by mainstream tourism, preserving its authenticity and charm. This makes it an ideal destination for those looking to venture off the beaten track, offering an experience that feels both exclusive and intimate.

In short, Tsum Valley is a hidden gem for trekkers seeking a unique blend of culture, spirituality, and untouched natural beauty. It offers a peaceful, authentic, and enriching experience unlike any other, making it a must-visit for those looking for something truly special in Nepal.

How Difficult is the Trek? Can Anyone Do It?

This trek is considered moderate to challenging and is suited for trekkers with some prior experience. The route involves long days of walking, with a significant elevation gain, so physical fitness is crucial. However, the trek is not as strenuous as some other high-altitude treks in Nepal, making it more accessible to intermediate trekkers.

It's important to note that the altitude can be a factor for some trekkers, as you'll ascend to over 3,700 meters. To prepare for this, it's recommended to gradually increase your fitness levels with strength training, aerobic workouts, and hiking on varied terrains before embarking on the trek.

Altitude Sickness

As with any high-altitude trek in Nepal, altitude sickness can be a concern on the Tsum Valley trek, especially as you near Tsum Village. The risk increases as you approach altitudes above 3,500 meters, so it's important to pace yourself and ascend slowly.

Symptoms of altitude sickness include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and loss of appetite. To avoid these, stay hydrated, take regular rest days, and avoid rushing the ascent.

Essential Information

Terrain & Trail Condition, What To Expect?

The Tsum Valley Trek is a demanding yet incredibly rewarding journey. While not as intense as some of the most difficult treks in Nepal, it still requires good physical fitness and mental toughness. As you traverse rugged terrains, ascend to high altitudes, and explore remote Tibetan-style villages, your endurance and preparation will play a huge role in your overall experience. Some sections of the path, particularly when approaching Tsum Village, can be tricky. Steep inclines, rocky and uneven paths, and exposure to landslide-prone areas mean that you'll need to be cautious and well-prepared. However, the scenery along the way makes every challenging step worth it.

Trek Distance and Daily Walking Hours

Trek Distance: On average, you'll cover around 150-170 kilometers over the course of your trek, depending on whether you choose to extend your journey.

Daily Walking Hours: Expect to walk between 5 to 7 hours each day, with some days being shorter and others involving steeper ascents.

Elevation Gain: You'll be trekking up to altitudes of 3,700 meters (12,000 feet), so gradual acclimatization is key to enjoying the trek without altitude sickness.

Travel Insurance: Why You Need It?

Due to the trek’s remote location and challenging terrain, travel insurance with helicopter evacuation is highly recommended. In case of an emergency, the ability to be airlifted could make all the difference. Make sure your insurance also covers medical expenses and the loss of personal belongings.

Permits for the Trek

The Tsum Valley requires specific permits to enter, as it's a restricted area. The three permits you will need are:

  • Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit: USD 40 per person for a 7-day permit. This fee increases slightly for longer stays.
  • Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) Permit: USD 30 per person.

These permits are essential, so make sure to arrange them in advance before your trek. The booked Company takes care of this Permit preparation, its just that you have to give your Passport on arrival to produce your Visa details at the Nepal Immigration to collect the required permits.

Best Season For Weather & Views

The best time to trek to Tsum Valley is from March to May and late September to November. These periods offer stable weather and clear mountain views, making the trekking conditions ideal.

Spring (March-May): The temperature ranges from 24°C to -4°C, with lush vegetation, blooming flowers, and stunning views of the Himalayan peaks.

Autumn (September-November): This is another excellent time, with clear skies and temperatures ranging from 25°C to -6°C, perfect for trekking and enjoying the serenity of the mountains.

If you’re looking for a quieter experience, trekking during the off-season (December to February or June to August) is possible, though expect colder weather and occasional rain.

Accommodation & Food on the Trek

Along the Tsum Valley, you’ll stay in tea houses that offer basic shared rooms, mostly squat toilets common, hot meals, and limited services like Wi-Fi and charging facilities (available at extra cost). The rooms are simple, and you should be prepared for basic amenities. The lack of modern infrastructure adds to the adventure, and the experience of staying in traditional villages gives you an authentic taste of rural life in Nepal.

Breakfast: Porridge, eggs, toast, pancakes, Tibetan bread, and tea/coffee.

Lunch/Dinner: Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, curry), noodles, pasta, soups, momo (dumplings), french fries with burgers and fried rice.

Beverages: Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and electrolyte drinks are available

Drinking Water: Throughout the trail, boiled water is available at tea houses for a small charge, or you can bring your own water purification tablets to purify water from streams and taps. For group size over 3 Pax we provide hot boiled water every evening, so bring bottles and camel bag recommended.
