How to Prepare for the Trek 

The Gokyo Lake EBC Trek Via Phortse is moderate to challenging. Strength training, aerobic exercises, and altitude acclimatization are essential to ensure you're physically prepared. Expect 6-7 hours of trekking per day at high altitudes, with challenging terrain that requires stamina and determination. This trek reaches altitudes above 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), and altitude sickness is a concern. To reduce the risk of altitude sickness, ascend gradually, drink plenty of water, and take regular rest days. Symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and nausea can occur, so always listen to your body and prioritize acclimatization.

Trek Plan For Perfect Weather and Views

The best time for the Everest Base Camp trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) seasons, when the weather is stable, and the mountain views are clear. Temperatures range from 25°C to -6°C depending on altitude, making it ideal for trekking. The months of October and November are especially popular due to the clear skies and festive season in Nepal.

Altitude Sickness Concerns

Everest High Passes is a high-altitude challenge trekkers are at risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) due to the rapid gain in elevation, but proper acclimatization, hydration 3-4 liters of water daily, and a well-paced itinerary can significantly reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Listen to your body and take AMS symptoms seriously. Avoid alcohol and smoking, these can dehydrate and reduce oxygen levels in the blood.

Common altitude sickness symptoms are headache ,nausea or dizziness, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, shortness of breath with exertion. Eat high-energy foods such as carbohydrates help with oxygen metabolism at high altitudes. Any question related to health very important, first share with your Group Leader as he/she is the right person in charge with all the knowledge and First-Aid experience for any mountain ailments.

It’s highly recommended to keep a contingency day during your trek. This extra day gives you the flexibility to adjust your plans in case of unforeseen weather conditions or health concerns. It also allows you to break up the final stretch to Lukla by staying overnight in Phakding, ensuring a more relaxed and enjoyable finish to your Himalayan adventure. Arriving at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport is the first step of your adventure in the heart of Nepal.

Once you collect your luggage and clear customs, you will be greeted warmly by your Trekking Group Leader or our Office Representative with a "Mystical Nepal Treks" board who will assist you and transfer you to your hotel.

Although Kathmandu is the busiest city in Nepal with hectic traffic, it still holds a unique charm with its local beauty and lively atmosphere. You will enjoy the fun of driving through its unfamiliar roads. The drive to the hotel will take you through Kathmandu’s lively streets, where the old and new come together. You’ll pass by ancient temples, busy markets, and modern shops, all blending into the colorful culture of Nepal.

The road from Kathmandu to Manthali is a mix of paved and unpaved sections. Some parts are smooth, but others can be bumpy and rough, especially during the monsoon season. The road conditions can change, and landslides are common in the hilly areas. However, the drive offers stunning views with terraced fields, lush forests, and traditional villages along the way. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of Nepal.

Your adventure begins with a thrilling 35-minute flight to Lukla, often called the gateway to the Everest region. The aerial views of snow-capped peaks and rugged landscapes will leave you breathless before you even land.

Upon arrival, the excitement intensifies as you start your trek. The trail follows the winding Dudh Koshi River, its cool waters rushing by as you pass charming Sherpa villages, each with a unique cultural touch. The path takes you over suspension bridges, swaying gently above the rushing river below, providing exhilarating moments and panoramic views of the towering peaks that surround you.

A leisurely 3-4 hour trek brings you to Phakding, your first stop on this Himalayan journey. Along the way, you’ll be enveloped in the tranquility of the mountains, with the serenity of the river and the sight of the distant peaks setting the stage for what’s to come.

Today is one of the many to come, last day of the thrilling trek. Soon after breakfast, retracing the trail we take a steep descend through a forest switch-back terrain down to the Hillary bridge and continue to Monjo for a short tea break. From here we continue to Phakding for lunch break a much needed one. Last chance to soak in the beauty of the Dudh Koshi Valley. Retrace your steps past Ghat to end the trek at Lukla.

As you begin your journey back to Lukla, it’s a moment to reflect on the incredible adventure. Retrace your steps through lush forests and charming Sherpa villages, with the mountains slowly fading in the distance. The trail may feel familiar, but every step holds the beauty and serenity of the Himalayas.

This is your last night in the mountains, so take a moment to soak in the peace of the surroundings and the memories you’ve made. It’s not just the end of a trek, but the closing of a chapter filled with breathtaking views, new experiences, and personal triumphs.

On the final night of the trek, it’s time to enjoy and celebrate! There will be fun activities like dancing, eating, drinking, and tipping – a great way to end the adventure with everyone.

You will be trekking through remote Sherpa villages, dense forests, and high-altitude valleys, with the goal of reaching Everest Base Camp and enjoying panoramic views from Kala Patthar. Unlike other more challenging treks, the route avoids the steep and rugged terrains and high-altitude passes, making it accessible for beginners and families.

Trek Distance and Duration

The Gokyo Lakes EBC trek via Phortse is an 11-day trek covering approximately 130-140 kilometers. You will spend around 5-7 hours walking per day, with regular rest stops to ensure safe acclimatization to the altitude. The journey takes you from Lukla (2,860 meters) through the scenic Namche Bazaar, up to the serene Gokyo Lakes, and then to the Everest Base Camp.

Rest & Refuel: Infrastructure On The Trek

The Everest region has a relatively well-established tourist infrastructure, with tea houses along the trail providing basic accommodation and meals. The accommodations in the higher altitudes are simple, with shared rooms and common squat toilets. The tea houses also offer extra services such as charging, Wi-Fi (at a cost), and hot showers (for an additional fee). While the trek is moderately challenging, the infrastructure ensures trekkers have access to basic comforts.Heating is usually available in communal dining areas, but rooms can be cold at night. The experience of staying in traditional villages gives you an authentic taste of rural life in Nepal.

Meals in Teahouses :

Breakfast: Porridge, eggs, toast, pancakes, Tibetan bread, and tea/coffee.

Lunch/Dinner: Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, curry), noodles, pasta, soups, momo (dumplings), french fries with burgers and fried rice.

Beverages: Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and electrolyte drinks are available

Drinking Water: Throughout the trail, boiled water is available at tea houses for a small charge, or you can bring your own water purification tablets to purify water from streams and taps. For group size over 3 Pax we provide hot boiled water every evening, so bring bottles and camel bag recommended.

Additional Expenses: The trek package generally includes rooms and three meals a day, but expenses for additional services like charging your devices, hot showers, and Wi-Fi are not covered in the package. Be prepared to budget around USD 15 to USD 20 per day for these extra services.

Snacks:
It’s advisable to bring your own snacks, such as energy bars, nuts, and dried fruits, especially for the higher sections of the trek where options are limited.

Given the remote nature of the Everest region and the physical demands of the trek, having travel insurance is essential. Ensure that your insurance covers medical emergencies, helicopter evacuation, and loss of personal belongings. Required Permits

To trek to Everest Base Camp, you will need two main permits: the Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit obtained at Lukla, and the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit. The permit and any trek logistics will be taken care of and managed once you are booked with us.

All  our trip itinerary have an arrival and departure day from Kathmandu so you can arrive and leave Kathmandu as per the program. You are also welcome and encouraged to arrive a day earlier or leave Nepal a day later to have a look around the vibrant Kathmandu Valley.
