Trip Overview

Explore the Hidden Gem to the west north of Nepal. The Tsum Valley, the first part of the journey is a mystical and off-the-beaten-path destination that promises a trekking through Tibetan Buddhist culture, untouched landscapes, and spectacular Himalayan views. For those seeking a unique trekking experience, the Manaslu Circuit combined with a detour to Tsum Valley offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure.

The Tsum Valley, a hidden gem, remains one of the most peaceful and undisturbed valleys, while the Manaslu Circuit takes you through rugged terrain and high-altitude passes that few trekkers ever experience.

Unlike the popular Annapurna and Everest treks, the Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit route remains relatively less crowded, making it perfect for those seeking solitude, tranquility, and a deep connection with nature. For the adventurous traveler willing to step off the beaten path, this trek will take you to parts of Nepal that few have witnessed.

Until the early 90s, the Manaslu region, including Tsum Valley, was completely closed to outsiders. It remained one of the least explored regions of Nepal, and trekking infrastructure was minimal. However, the opening of tea houses over recent years has made it more accessible.

Trekking here isn’t just about reaching a destination; it’s about experiencing the beauty of nature, the richness of culture, and pushing your limits physically and mentally. If you're looking for a trek that challenges you while also offering an immersion into a serene world, the Manaslu Circuit trek with Tsum Valley is calling. As the name Manaslu literally translate to the "Mountain of the Soul."

Why is The Tsum Valley The Hidden Gem Of Nepal?

Tucked away near the Tibetan border, the Tsum Valley is still relatively untouched by modern tourism. It’s a place where life moves at its own pace, far away from the crowds. Tsum Valley offers the perfect escape.

Tsum Valley, often referred to as the "Hidden Valley," is a secluded and remote gem nestled in the Gorkha district of Nepal. It was only opened to the outside world in 2008, making it a relatively new treasure for trekkers seeking something off the beaten path. What makes Tsum Valley truly special is its untouched natural beauty, rich Buddhist culture, and serene atmosphere, offering a perfect escape for those in search of tranquility and spiritual connection.

Rich Cultural Heritage: Tsum Valley is steeped in Tibetan Buddhist traditions, and its monasteries hold great religious significance. Ancient monasteries like Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, and Dhephu Doma Nunnery Gompa provide a glimpse into the region's profound spiritual history. Visitors can witness daily rituals, hear melodic Tibetan mantras, and immerse themselves in the peaceful ambiance of these sacred sites.

Breathtaking Natural Beauty: The valley is surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, lush forests, and crystal-clear rivers. With fewer crowds compared to other popular trekking destinations in Nepal, Tsum Valley offers a truly tranquil and pristine environment, perfect for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature.

Spiritual Journey: As a sacred Himalayan pilgrimage site, Tsum Valley holds deep spiritual significance for the locals. Trekkers who visit this valley can experience not just natural beauty, but also a profound sense of peace, as they explore its monasteries and interact with the local people, who still follow traditional Tibetan Buddhist practices.

Remote and Untouched: Tsum Valley remains largely unexplored by mainstream tourism, preserving its authenticity and charm. This makes it an ideal destination for those looking to venture off the beaten track, offering an experience that feels both exclusive and intimate.

In short, Tsum Valley is a hidden gem for trekkers seeking a unique blend of culture, spirituality, and untouched natural beauty. It offers a peaceful, authentic, and enriching experience unlike any other, making it a must-visit for those looking for something truly special in Nepal.

What can you expect?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is often hailed as one of the best treks in Nepal, known for its remote beauty and challenging terrain. The trek takes you around and through the 8th highest MT. Manaslu, Tibetan-style villages, dense forests, glaciers, and crosses the high-altitude Larkya La Pass (5,106 meters). The journey is rewarding, offering a sense of remoteness and tranquility, away from the popular Annapurna and Everest circuits.

  • Distance: The entire trek covers approximately 177 kilometers, with both ascents and descents.
  • Altitude: The trek reaches a high point at Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters, so proper acclimatization is crucial.
  • Duration: This trek usually lasts about 18 days, including the detour to Tsum Valley, making it a relatively long but highly mesmerising experience.

How Is Tsum Valley Connected To The Manaslu Circuit Trek?

After Jagat, reaching Lokpa on the Manaslu Circuit, trekkers have the option to take a detour to Tsum Valley. This extension adds another week to the trek, but it’s worth it for the seclusion and stunning vistas. You’ll experience fewer crowds, and trekkers often describe Tsum Valley as a “hidden treasure,” where traditional Tibetan life remains largely unchanged.

Trail & Terrain Difficulty

The trek is demanding, particularly due to its high-altitude passes, rugged terrain, and steep ascents. On average, you’ll trek 6-7 hours a day, covering approximately 177 kilometers. The trek takes you from lower villages at 1,900 meters to the high-altitude Larkya La Pass 5106m, where acclimatization is key to preventing altitude sickness. Trekking in areas prone to landslides, glacier moraines, and rocky trails requires physical and mental strength preparation and stamina.

How To Prepare For The Manaslu Circuit & Tsum Valley Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley treks require good physical fitness and preparation. Before embarking on the trek, engage in aerobic workouts, strength training, and acclimatization hikes. Because of the remote nature of the trek, mental endurance is just as important. Prepare to disconnect from modern conveniences and embrace the simplicity of life on the trail, enjoying basic tea houses, and sharing meals with fellow trekkers and locals.

Packing essentials include:

  • Layered clothing for varying temperatures
  • High-quality trekking boots for rocky and steep terrain
  • Sunscreen and lip balm (high-altitude sun exposure is intense)
  • Snacks and energy bars for fuel during long days on the trail

Is Altitude Sickness An Issue?

As with any high-altitude trek, the Tsum Valley & Manaslu Circuit Trek carries the risk of altitude sickness. Your Group Leader will always be available to take care of any mountain ailments. Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, and nausea. To prevent altitude sickness:

  • Ascend gradually, allowing your body time to adjust.
  • Stay well-hydrated and consume enough food.
  • Rest properly and avoid overexerting yourself.
  • If you feel symptoms, descend immediately to a lower altitude.

From the monastery, you will enjoy one of the most incredible views of Manaslu and nearby mountains. The view from Pung Gyen Gompa is absolutely stunning.

After the hike, we will return to Shya La for lunch, and the rest of the afternoon will be free for you to explore on your own.

Once there, be awed by Manaslu, the 8th-highest mountain in the world. During expedition season, the base camp becomes a lively hub for climbers and mountaineers.

While this hike is optional, it’s a great chance to experience the majestic Manaslu up close. Another good option hike on the acclimatisation day is the Pungen Gompa whis offers 360 degree panaroma with Manaslu right in the front.

As we hike further, we are treated to breathtaking views of the entire Manaslu range. The sight of Dharamsala, also known as Larke Base Camp, coming into view is truly awe-inspiring.

Due to the high altitude, we will be trekking at a slow pace, allowing our bodies to acclimatize to the thin mountain air. The facilities in Dharamsala are quite basic, with a few simple teahouses offering shelter. Please be prepared for simple rooms, limited food options, and minimal heating.

Standing at an impressive 5,106 meters (16,751 feet), this high mountain pass forms a natural connection between the Manang District and the lush, lower Mustang region. Historically, it was a crucial trading route during the Salt Trade Era, and its significance remains today as it offers some of the most breathtaking views in the Himalayas.

The ascent to Larke La is a gradual climb, though it takes time to reach the summit. It's important to ensure you're well-acclimatized before attempting this pass, as the altitude can cause discomfort if not properly managed. The trail takes us through glaciers, boulders, ice lakes, and gravel paths, making for a truly unique and rugged experience. On a clear day, the panoramic views from the top are simply spectacular, with majestic peaks like Manaslu, Himalchuli, and the Annapurna range surrounding us in all directions.

After conquering Larke La, the descent to Bhimthang is steep and requires extra caution. The 3-hour downhill hike involves a rocky, gravelly trail, which can be slippery, so trekking poles and careful steps are highly recommended. However, the stunning scenery of Manaslu and Himalchuli accompanying us on the way down makes every step worthwhile.

Bhimthang is the perfect place to rest and recover after the tough pass. This picturesque village, with its wide meadows, grazing animals, and beautiful teahouses, offers a peaceful atmosphere to relax and soak in the beauty of the surrounding mountains.

Essential Information

Best Season For Good Weather & Views

The best time to do the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley trek is between March to May (spring) and late September to November (autumn). During these months, the weather is stable, the skies are clear, and the mountains are visible in their full glory. The temperature ranges from -4°C to 24°C, making it perfect for trekking.

Trekking in the off-season (December to February or June to August) is possible, but requires additional planning due to snow or monsoon conditions.

What Are the Permits Required for the Trek?

The Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit Trek require four mandatory permits due to their remote and restricted nature. These are Special Trekking Permits, also known as Restricted Area Permits, for both Tsum Valley and Manaslu, which are issued by the immigration office in Nepal. Additionally, you will need the MCAP and ACAP permits.

Required Permits:

  1. Restricted Area Permit (RAP): The Restricted Area Permit, or Special Trekking Permit, is the primary permit needed for both Manaslu and Tsum Valleys. This means you will require TWO separate Special Permits for Manaslu and Tsum Valley.

    Cost:

    • Manaslu Special Permit:
      • From September to November: USD 100 per person for the first week and USD 15 per day per person thereafter.
      • From December to August: USD 75 per person for the first week and USD 10 per day per person thereafter. Payable in Nepali currency.
    • Tsum Valley Special Permit:
      • From September to November: USD 40 per person for the first week and USD 7 per day per person thereafter.
      • From December to August: USD 30 per person for the first week and USD 7 per day per person thereafter. Payable in Nepali currency.

Any legally registered trekking agency in Nepal, such as Mystical Nepal Treks, can assist in obtaining these permits.

  2. Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): This permit is required as the trek passes through the Manaslu Conservation Area. It can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or at the entry points along the trekking route.

Cost: Approximately USD 25 or equivalent to NPR 3000.

  3. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): As the trek ends in the Annapurna region, an ACAP is necessary, depending on your specific route. It can be obtained from the same places as the MCAP.

Cost: About USD 25 or equivalent to NPR 3000.

  4. Trekking Information Management System (TIMS): The TIMS permit was temporarily discontinued due to COVID-19, but it is expected to be required again starting in mid-2024.

Cost: Around USD 15 or NPR 2000 equivalent. Once officially relaunched, trekkers can obtain this permit from the TAAN (Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal) or the Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
