Get Acquainted About Island Peak Climbing

Island Peak, also known as Imja Tse, is a striking mountain that stands tall in the Khumbu region, surrounded by the mighty peaks of Lhotse and Ama Dablam. The name "Island Peak" was coined by British explorer Eric Shipton in 1951 after he saw the peak during a reconnaissance mission. Its resemblance to an island standing in a frozen sea of ice inspired the name, and it has since become a popular destination for climbers from around the world.

At 6,189 meters, Island Peak offers a challenging yet achievable summit for mountaineers, making it a perfect stepping stone for those aiming to scale higher peaks in the Himalayas. The climb combines both technical difficulty and incredible rewards, with the opportunity to summit a peak that holds both cultural and historical significance.

Island Peak is a symbol of the union between the local Sherpa culture and the global mountaineering community. The two names, "Imja Tse" and "Island Peak", reflect this blend of local reverence and international recognition, and climbers who stand atop its summit become part of a long legacy of adventurers.

Accommodation & Food during the Trek

Along the Island Peak with Everest Base Camp trek, there are tea houses available at most stops, so trekkers don’t need to camp. These tea houses are basic establishments offering shared rooms with communal washrooms. They provide meals, and services like charging, WiFi, and hot showers are available at additional costs. Our Island Peak with Everest Base Camp package includes rooms and three meals per day, ensuring you’re well-fed and comfortable throughout the journey.

Accommodation

Rooms: Tea house rooms are simple, typically with shared washrooms. We will try to book the best available accommodation with private washrooms wherever possible, but this cannot be guaranteed at higher altitudes due to limited facilities.

Single Rooms: Single rooms are available in some tea houses, but they come at an extra cost.

Basic Facilities: The rooms in the higher altitude areas like Lobuche, Gorakshep and Dingboche are very basic and may be smaller due to the high demand from trekkers. At Island Peak Base Camp we arrange fixed tents for the climbing group. Toilet tents for restroom uses. Be prepared for colder nights as you gain altitude.

Food

Meals Provided: Most tea houses serve three meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu typically includes dal bhat tarkari (rice and lentils), momo (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), porridge, and Tibetan bread. These are staple foods that provide the energy you need for your trek. Other Options: You’ll also find pasta, fried rice, stews, curries, French fries, burgers, and sometimes even pizza or sandwiches at some higher-altitude tea houses.

Keep in mind that food options might be more limited at higher elevations, especially as you approach Island Peak Base Camp. But at the Island Peak Base Camp we have our cooks who prepare best hygienic food of the trek, You will love it.

Drinking Water

Boiled Water: Boiled water is provided by our staff inclusive in the package mainly for environmental concerns. This is the safest way to stay hydrated during the trek.

Purification Tablets: You can also use water purification tablets to treat the water. These are a great option for reducing costs and ensuring the water is safe to drink.

Snacks

Bring Snacks: It’s a good idea to bring snacks like nuts, energy bars, chocolate, and dried fruit from Kathmandu to keep your energy up during the trek. These can be especially helpful on long days when you need a quick energy boost.

Available Snacks: Some tea houses sell snacks such as chocolates, biscuits, and chips. However, the prices may be higher at higher altitudes due to the logistics of bringing goods to the region.

Additional Services & Expenses

Charging Devices: Charging your devices (phones, cameras) is possible in most tea houses, but there is typically a small charge, ranging from NPR 100 to NPR 500 depending on the location.

Wi-Fi & Hot Showers: Wi-Fi and hot showers are available in some tea houses, but both come at an additional cost. Expect to pay NPR 300 to NPR 500 for a hot shower at higher altitudes. Wi-Fi charges can range from NPR 500 to NPR 1,000 for a limited period of use.

Budgeting for Additional Costs: On average, you should budget USD 15 to USD 20 per day for extra services like charging, Wi-Fi, and hot showers. The package covers meals and accommodation, but these extras will be an additional cost.

Special Notes

Dietary Requirements: If you have specific dietary preferences or restrictions (e.g., vegetarian, gluten-free), make sure to inform the tea house staff or your trekking company in advance. While most places offer vegetarian options, more specialized diets might be difficult to accommodate.

Altitude & Appetite: Keep in mind that at higher altitudes, your appetite might decrease due to the effects of altitude. However, staying well-hydrated and eating energy-dense food like nuts and bars will help keep you going.
