Tour Overview

The Upper Mustang Jeep Safari is a thrilling journey into the remote and unexplored region of Nepal, offering a unique adventure that takes you through the mystical landscapes of Lo-Manthang, often referred to as "the Last Forbidden Kingdom." This area was closed to foreign tourists until 1992 and still remains largely untouched. The Upper Mustang Jeep Safari offers a relatively comfortable and accessible way to explore one of Nepal's most remote and culturally rich regions. Unlike the physically demanding treks in Nepal, this tour is suited for those looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure without the physical strain of hiking for days. This tour is ideal for those who want to explore the region’s breathtaking landscapes of semi desert canyons and caves with a snow capped Himalayas in the background simply awe-inspiring. An opportunity to witness a true Tibetan culture, and ancient monasteries, all without the rigorous demands of trekking.

Why Is the Tour a Must-Do?

Discover Ancient Tibetan Culture: Upper Mustang is steeped in Tibetan Buddhism, and throughout the tour, you’ll encounter ancient monasteries, chortens, and centuries-old traditions that have been preserved by the local people. Visit Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, where you can explore the medieval-style city and its iconic Tibetan culture.

Off the Beaten Path Adventure: Unlike the crowded trekking routes of Annapurna and Everest, the Upper Mustang Jeep Safari allows you to explore a truly off-the-beaten-path region. The stark landscapes of desert-like terrain, the dramatic cliffs of the Kali Gandaki Gorge, and views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges create a surreal, picturesque experience.

Comfort and Accessibility: While most trekking routes in Nepal require long, physically demanding hikes, the Upper Mustang Jeep Safari offers a more comfortable way to reach remote areas. You’ll travel in a 4x4 vehicle, making the journey accessible to a wider range of travelers, including those with limited trekking experience.

Highlights of the Tour

Lo Manthang: Explore the hidden walled city, a maze of narrow alleys, ancient monasteries, and traditional Tibetan architecture.

Tibetan Monasteries: Visit centuries-old monasteries like Ghar Gompa and Jhong Gompa, where you can connect with the region’s rich spiritual heritage.

Altitude Sickness

Although the Upper Mustang Jeep Safari is less physically demanding than traditional trekking, altitude sickness can still be a concern due to the high elevations of the region. Lo Manthang and other areas are located at altitudes above 3,800 meters, and parts of the journey go as high as 4,000 meters or more.

Altitude sickness symptoms may include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Loss of appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue

To prevent altitude sickness:

Ascend Slowly: The jeep will travel to high altitudes gradually, but it’s important to make stops for rest and acclimatization.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help your body adjust to the altitude.

Eat Well: Keep your energy levels up by eating enough food.

Avoid Overexertion: Don’t push yourself physically; take time to rest and enjoy the surroundings.

Consult Your Doctor: Speak to your doctor before the trip, especially if you’re concerned about altitude sickness. Bring along any necessary medication, such as Diamox.

If you experience mild symptoms, informing your guide and resting is key. In the rare case of severe altitude sickness, you may need to descend to a lower elevation.

Essential Information

Tour Difficulty

The Upper Mustang Jeep Safari offers a relatively comfortable and accessible way to explore one of Nepal's most remote and culturally rich regions. Unlike the physically demanding treks in Nepal, this tour is suited for those looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure without the physical strain of hiking for days.

The rugged terrain, high altitudes, and desert-like conditions in the Upper Mustang region present a unique set of challenges, but the journey itself is much easier thanks to 4x4 jeep transport. Despite being a jeep safari, travelers still need to be mentally and physically prepared for long rides on rough, uneven roads, and some days of travel at high altitudes.

Tour Distance and Duration

The Upper Mustang Jeep Safari covers roughly 160 to 200 kilometers, depending on the route and areas visited.

You’ll travel across a variety of landscapes, from lush valleys to high-altitude deserts.

The total duration of the tour ranges from 7 to 10 days, with 4-6 hours of jeep driving each day.

Daily Driving Hours

The daily driving hours can vary between 4 to 7 hours, depending on the terrain and stops along the way. These jeep rides will take you through rugged roads, narrow valleys, and occasionally unstable trails, offering scenic views at every turn.

Tourist Infrastructure

Upper Mustang is a remote region with limited infrastructure. However, tea houses and small hotels and guesthouses are available in towns like Lo Manthang, where basic amenities such as food and shelter are provided.

Accommodation is basic but comfortable, with shared rooms and simple amenities. However, comfort varies, especially in remote areas.

For those seeking more comfort, private room options are available at additional costs.

Travel Insurance

Since the Upper Mustang region is far from modern cities, it is crucial to have travel insurance that includes helicopter evacuation. In case of emergencies, jeep access may not always be immediately available, and airlifting could be required for quick medical attention.

We recommend that your travel insurance covers:

Helicopter evacuation services

Medical coverage

Loss of personal belongings or baggage

Trip cancellation or delays

Having these services will save you a lot of trouble, especially in a region as isolated as Upper Mustang.

Permits

To visit Upper Mustang, you will need two essential permits:

Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

Cost:

USD 500 for 10 days (high season: March to November)

USD 350 for 10 days (low season: December to February)

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Cost: USD 30 per person

Please note that these permits are mandatory for all visitors, and the RAP is required to access the Upper Mustang region due to its restricted status. These permits are generally arranged through a registered trekking agency or tour operator.

Best Time for the Tour

The ideal times for the Upper Mustang Jeep Safari Tour are during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is stable, and skies are clear, offering excellent visibility of the majestic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. During these seasons, the temperature remains mild, ranging from 15°C to 25°C during the day and -5°C to 5°C during the nights.

Spring (March to May): Warm weather, vibrant flora, and clear skies. Best for viewing flowering rhododendrons and lush landscapes.

Autumn (September to November): Crisp air and clear views of the mountains. Ideal for photography and comfortable exploration.

While winter (December to February) can be cold with temperatures dropping below freezing, and monsoon season (June to August) can cause landslides and roadblock issues, these seasons are still possible for adventurous travelers looking for a more isolated experience.

Accommodation and Food During the Tour

Accommodation:

Basic tea houses and guesthouses are available along the route, offering shared rooms with simple bedding.

Some guesthouses provide private rooms at an additional cost, but most accommodations are shared.

Lo Manthang offers slightly more comfortable stays, with some better amenities in the guesthouses.

Food:

The food along the route is Tibetan-style, including dal bhat, momo, thukpa, and Tibetan bread.

You can also find noodles, fried rice, and steamed buns in some areas.

Western-style good coffee and  food such as pasta, french fries, and burgers are available in some guesthouses.

Drinking water is available along the trail, either boiled or bottled (at an extra cost). It's advisable to carry water purification tablets to ensure safe drinking water.

Additional Costs:

Expenses like WiFi, hot showers, and charging devices at guesthouses might not be included in the tour package and typically cost between USD 5 to USD 10 per service.

Budget approximately USD 15 to USD 20 for additional services per day.
